The Tour

The Rainbow
That Grew on a Mountain

Rainbow Mountain — also called Vinicunca, or Montaña de 7 Colores in Spanish — is one of the most spectacular geological phenomena on Earth. Sitting at 5,200 meters / 17,060 feet in the Andes mountain range, its layers of multicolored sedimentary rock — reds, yellows, greens, lavenders and whites — form a landscape that looks hand-painted.

This full-day tour from Cusco takes you by private transport to the trailhead, and with your guide you'll cover the 7 km / 4.3 mi climb up to the main viewpoint. No crowds, small groups, and plenty of time to enjoy the summit.

One-of-a-kind colors — Formed by minerals like iron oxides, chlorite and dolomite over millions of years. The mountain was covered in glacial ice until just a few years ago; the gradual melting revealed these colors.

Small groups, an authentic experience — Maximum 12 people per group. No tourist caravans. Real time at the summit to take it in, photograph it and feel the place.

Breakfast and lunch included — We start the day well fed. On the way back, a buffet lunch at a local restaurant serving traditional Andean cuisine.

I'd never seen anything like it. The colors are real, not Photoshop. The hike is tough because of the altitude, but the guide keeps your pace. Small groups — the best part of the tour.

The best tour of my entire trip through Peru. Breakfast before we started, Andean lunch on the way back, the small group, and a guide who explains the geology behind the colors. Worth every dollar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need
to Know Before You Go

How difficult is the hike to Rainbow Mountain?

Rated moderate to challenging. It's 7 km / 4.3 mi up and 7 km / 4.3 mi down (14 km / 8.7 mi total), with an elevation gain of 900 m / 2,950 ft up to 5,200 m / 17,060 ft. The biggest challenge is the altitude, not the slope itself. With good prior acclimatization (2 days in Cusco), most people with no trekking experience complete it without issues.

Why does the mountain have those colors?

The colors come from the mineral composition of the sedimentary rock: iron oxide (red/orange), iron sulfide (yellow), chlorite (green), clay (white) and dolomite (lavender/purple). The mountain was covered by glaciers until just a few years ago; glacial retreat due to climate change revealed these colors, unique in the world.

What's the best time to visit?

The best time is the dry season: May through October. Skies are clear and the colors show at their full intensity. During the rainy season (November–April) there can be snow, fog or rain covering the colors. Even so, the tour runs year-round, weather permitting — if conditions aren't good, we reschedule at no cost.

Does the price include breakfast and lunch?

Yes. The tour includes breakfast before the hike and an Andean buffet lunch at the local restaurant on the way back. Lunch includes soups, a main course, a drink and dessert made with local Andean ingredients (quinoa, native potatoes, purple corn).

Can I rent a horse if I can't hike the whole way?

Yes. At the trailhead, local horsemen offer horses to cover part or all of the climb. The cost is approximately $15–25 USD (paid directly to the horseman, not included in the tour). It's a good option if you have knee problems or the altitude affects you more than expected.
